Washington, DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed details surrounding the death of a US soldier in Iraq, confirming that initial information indicates the attack was carried out by Iranian-backed militias. He also stressed that the United States will respond to any attack targeting its forces in the region.
Rubio stated that the US soldier was killed while at a base belonging to the international coalition forces inside Iraq. He explained that the relevant authorities are continuing their investigations to identify those responsible for the attack and hold them accountable, in coordination with the Iraqi government.
He added that the US administration is committed to protecting its forces deployed in the Middle East and will not tolerate any entity that threatens the security of American military personnel or targets American interests.
The US Secretary of State noted that the continued attacks by armed factions pose a threat to Iraq’s stability and undermine counterterrorism efforts. He also called on Iraqi authorities to take decisive measures to prevent the recurrence of such attacks.
Rubio’s remarks come at a time of escalating security tensions in the region, amid fears of widening confrontations between the United States and Iranian-backed armed groups. This could have repercussions for the stability of the entire region.
