  • Prevention as the Last Line of Defense

Athens, Greece – Greece is facing difficult days with the escalation of forest and agricultural fires across the country. The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced that firefighting teams dealt with dozens of fires over the past two days. Moreover, the ministry described the situation as an increasing operational test. This is due to the simultaneous outbreak of these fires in dangerous areas.

Fierce Battles Against the Flames in Mandra

According to special reports by Voice of Emirates, the largest and most complex fire was in the Oinoe area of Mandra in Attica. Authorities mobilized hundreds of firefighters, supported by dozens of vehicles and firefighting planes, to extinguish the flames. Furthermore, this area was classified under Category 4 for extreme risk to protect human lives.

The ministry confirmed that the situation there is now under control. Teams are continuing to handle active hotspots to avoid crisis exacerbation. The mayor of Mandra noted the precautionary evacuation of several homes without any recorded losses to residential properties. Meanwhile, Central Macedonia experienced extreme pressure. This was due to several simultaneous fires breaking out that depleted available forces.

Intensive Efforts in Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki

The Oraiokastro fire in Thessaloniki posed a significant challenge as firefighters waged a continuous battle throughout the night. They worked to control it and prevent its spread. At the same time, fires in Nea Kallikratia in Chalkidiki were fully contained thanks to rapid intervention. The immediate mobilization of ground and air forces succeeded in containing the fires in their early stages. As a result, they prevented them from spreading to populated areas.

Prevention as the Last Line of Defense

Risks still remain as other regions are expected to face a very high risk level specifically on Monday. Additional areas including Attica and Evia have been classified under Category 3 for risk which requires proactive intervention. The Civil Protection Department called on citizens to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities that could cause fire sparks.

Authorities emphasized the necessity of strict compliance with civil defense instructions and maintaining the cleanliness of outdoor spaces to protect the environment. This escalation comes at a time when meteorologists expect severe weather conditions to continue in the coming days. Therefore, state apparatuses are on high alert to ensure no new hotspots spiral out of control amidst the soaring temperatures.
