Damascus, Syria – The Syrian People Assembly Elections Committee announced the postponement of the first session of parliament, which was scheduled for tomorrow, Monday.
The committee stated that a new date will be set later,
without disclosing the reasons for the postponement.
The first session of the People Assembly has been postponed
The committee had previously set July 6 as the date
for the inaugural session of
the new People Assembly to be held at the Assembly’s headquarters in Damascus.
This follows the issuance last week by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa of Decree No. (143) of 2026.
The decree includes the names of the members of the People’s Assembly,
including the one-third required to complete the Assembly’s formation.
Macron’s visit to Damascus is expected
Simultaneously, the Syrian Presidency’s Media Directorate announced that French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled
to visit Damascus to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and issues of common interest.
It explained that Macron will be accompanied by a delegation including investors and representatives of French companies,
a move reflecting the two countries’ intention to expand economic cooperation, in addition to addressing political matters.
Strengthening Syrian-French relations
Presidents Ahmed al-Sharaa and Emmanuel Macron are scheduled to hold
an expanded dialogue session with the participation of their respective delegations.
The discussions will address regional and international developments,
as well as prospects for bilateral cooperation in various fields.
This anticipated visit is a continuation of the political dialogue between Damascus and Paris,
following the Syrian president’s visit to France last year.
During that visit, he held talks with his French counterpart at the Élysée Palace.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts,
and expanding areas of cooperation between the two countries.
