In a significant blow to organized crime syndicates, the Australian Border Force announced the interception of a massive drug smuggling attempt. The drugs were professionally hidden inside a refrigerated shipping container arriving at Port Botany in Sydney from South America.
Security Operation Details
The operation began on June 24, when Australian Border Force officers inspected a refrigerated container carrying a shipment of frozen berries imported from Chile. Upon examining the cargo, which was destined for northwest Sydney, officers became suspicious of unusual packages. These packages were carefully hidden among the berry boxes.
The inspection revealed 110 bricks of cocaine, each weighing one kilogram, totaling 110 kilograms of the white powder. Authorities valued the shipment at approximately 36 million Australian dollars. Moreover, the case has been referred to the Australian Federal Police to continue the investigation.
Targeting Supply Chains and Refrigerated Containers
Acting Head of Investigations at the Australian Federal Police, Aaron Burgess, stated that organized crime networks continue to exploit supply chains. Specifically, they target refrigerated containers as cover for smuggling illicit materials. He emphasized that these criminal networks do not care about the social and economic devastation they cause.
Burgess called on the public to cooperate with security agencies. He asserted that any information, no matter how small, could be the key to identifying those responsible for this failed attempt. Meanwhile, authorities are currently working to trace the leads of this operation to dismantle the associated supply networks.
Rising Border Smuggling Trends
Acting Superintendent at the Australian Border Force, Nolin Shankar, revealed a concerning indicator. She noted that cocaine seizures at the Australian border have increased by 23% compared to the same period last year. She explained that this rise in seizure rates reflects the effectiveness of the intelligence strategies and operational capabilities of border officers.
Shankar affirmed that authorities are committed to tracking these gangs and dismantling their operations, regardless of the innovative tricks smugglers use to conceal their illicit goods. Furthermore, this operation is part of a series of strict measures to secure Australian ports and cut off supply routes for international drug cartels.
