Warsaw, Poland – A Polish minister emphasized that the commencement of negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union does not necessarily guarantee their success or completion. He stressed that the process is subject to rigorous standards and lengthy procedures, requiring the fulfillment of all conditions imposed by the EU on candidate countries.
The minister explained that accession negotiations involve several technical and political stages, including a comprehensive review of legislation and reforms across various sectors. He added that consensus among all EU member states is essential before any final decision is made regarding membership.
He noted that the European Union supports Ukraine politically and economically, but this support does not mean bypassing the rules governing the enlargement process. He emphasized that every candidate country is required to implement the necessary reforms and fully adhere to the standards of the rule of law, governance, and economic reform.
He added that the path to membership could take years, and that negotiations represent an important step, but they are not an automatic guarantee of accession, given the political, economic, and security complexities surrounding the Ukrainian situation, especially with the ongoing war and the challenges facing the country.
