Paris, France – France announced it is considering measures in response to Burkina Faso’s decision to sever diplomatic relations between the two countries, describing the move as “hostile and baseless.”
This comes as the latest development in escalating tensions between the two nations.
Paris rejects the accusations
The French Foreign Ministry stated that the decision by the transitional authorities in Burkina Faso represents an unjustified escalation.
It also expressed regret over the severing of diplomatic relations.
The ministry affirmed that this step reflects a worrying trend being pursued by the authorities in Ouagadougou.
Furthermore, the French Foreign Ministry urged its citizens in Burkina Faso
to exercise extreme caution in light of the political and security developments in the country.
Accusations of supporting “sabotage networks”
The transitional authorities in Burkina Faso announced the implementation of their decision
to sever diplomatic relations with France, accusing Paris of supporting “sabotage networks and terrorists.”
These accusations have been categorically denied by the French government.
The decision comes after years of tension between the two countries over security and sovereignty issues.
It also coincides with a decline in French influence in several countries in the Sahel region of Africa.
Ongoing security crisis
For years, Burkina Faso has faced repeated attacks by armed groups operating in the Sahel region.
Their activities have also spread from Mali into Burkinabe territory, resulting in the deaths of thousands
and the displacement of millions, amidst escalating security and humanitarian challenges.
Observers believe that the severing of diplomatic relations between Paris and Ouagadougou marks
a new phase in the reshaping of relations between France and several West African countries.
This comes against a backdrop of growing disagreements over security, military cooperation, and national sovereignty.
