Paris, France – The French Ministry of Health has announced the first confirmed case of Ebola in the country.
The case involves a person who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo after participating in a humanitarian mission.
Authorities also confirmed that the risk level to the population remains low at this time.
Isolating the infected person and tracing contacts
The ministry explained that the infected individual, a French doctor,
was immediately transferred to a specialized isolation unit after his Ebola infection was confirmed.
Health authorities have begun contact tracing and monitoring for any potential related cases.
Health officials emphasized that the implemented preventative measures aim to prevent further transmission and ensure the case is contained.
They also noted that the situation is being closely monitored by specialized medical teams.
Widespread outbreak of the virus in Congo
This infection comes at a time when the Democratic Republic of
Congo is experiencing a widespread Ebola outbreak linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain.
This strain is among the least contagious but also highly dangerous.
According to the latest international health data, the current outbreak has infected more than 1,000 people and killed 267.
There are growing concerns about the continued spread of the infection
in several populated areas and camps for internally displaced persons.
European concerns and continued monitoring
Health reports indicated that the current strain spread rapidly during its initial weeks.
As a result, European authorities strengthened health monitoring measures for travelers arriving from affected areas.
This outbreak is considered one of the most serious Ebola outbreaks in recent years,
following the major epidemic that struck West Africa between 2014 and 2016.
The 2018 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo was also a significant event.
In a separate development, reports indicated that an American citizen receiving treatment for the virus in Germany has recovered.
He was discharged from the hospital in early June after testing negative for the virus.
