Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi authorities announced a series of technical and logistical measures in preparation for the expected surge of water flowing from Syria. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to manage water resources efficiently and enhance the country’s ability to utilize the inflows into its rivers and reservoirs.

Relevant authorities confirmed that technical teams are continuously monitoring the flow of water through the shared rivers and implementing flexible operating plans for dams and reservoirs to accommodate the anticipated volumes and ensure their balanced distribution across the various governorates and agricultural regions.

The relevant authorities are continuously updating hydrological data to estimate expected water flows and determine how to utilize them, while also developing contingency plans to address any sudden changes in water levels in the coming period.

The Iraqi government affirmed that water is a national priority and that it continues to coordinate with neighboring countries on the management of shared rivers in a way that achieves mutual interests and ensures the equitable and sustainable use of water resources in accordance with international laws and conventions.

Officials hope that the anticipated water surge will contribute to bolstering water reserves and improving the overall water resources situation in the country, especially with the approach of summer, which typically sees increased consumption rates and higher demand for water in the agricultural and service sectors.
