Washington – United States: The US Department of the Treasury announced the imposition of sanctions on Brigadier General Khattar Nasser Al-Din, head of the National Security Department in the Lebanese General Security apparatus, as part of new American measures targeting figures Washington accuses of being linked to activities it deems threatening to regional stability.
The US Treasury Department stated that the sanctions include freezing any potential assets of the Lebanese official inside the United States, in addition to banning financial transactions with him by American individuals and institutions.
A New US Escalation and Continuous Pressures to Undermine Regional Influence
These sanctions come within a series of continuous American measures targeting figures and entities in Lebanon and the region, amid Washington’s tightening of its pressure on parties associated with Hezbollah and Iranian influence.
The US Department of State had previously announced the imposition of sanctions on individuals it said contributed to undermining Lebanon’s sovereignty and obstructing efforts to disarm Hezbollah, including political and security officials.
Pressures on Lebanese Institutions and Escalating Tensions with Washington
Observers believe that targeting a security official at this level reflects the escalating tension between Washington and certain Lebanese institutions, especially in light of American accusations regarding an increased influence of Hezbollah within the core apparatuses of the state.
This move could also lead to increased political and economic pressures on Lebanon, which has already been facing a severe financial and living crisis for years.
Anticipation of Political Reactions and the Future of US Strategy in Lebanon
No official comment has been issued so far by the Lebanese authorities or the General Security apparatus regarding the new US sanctions, while the move is expected to spark widespread internal political reactions during the coming hours.
The United States continues to repeatedly impose sanctions on figures and entities in Lebanon as part of its strategy aimed at limiting Hezbollah’s influence and drying up its financial and political support sources, according to declarations by successive US administrations.
