Washington, DC – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Cuba’s future belongs to its people alone. But he stressed that any threat to US national security remains a “red line” that cannot be ignored.
Preference for a diplomatic solution
Rubio explained that the US administration is handling the Cuban issue from a national security perspective. This comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Havana over a number of political and security matters.
The US Secretary of State indicated that President Donald Trump prefers to reach an agreement with Cuba through negotiation. However, he stipulated that Cuba must be a “peaceful nation” and pose no threat to the United States or its interests.
He added that Washington is not ruling out the diplomatic path, but is also prepared to take the necessary measures to protect its national security if required.
Ongoing tension between Washington and Havana
Rubio’s remarks come amid escalating US political rhetoric toward Cuba in recent times. This follows mutual accusations between the two sides regarding regional and security policies in the Caribbean.
Relations between the two countries have been strained intermittently for years. At the same time, there have been limited attempts to reopen channels of dialogue, but without any substantial progress.
Observers believe Rubio’s statements reflect a mix of political pressure and conditional openness. This comes at a time when international calls are growing for de-escalation in the region and a return to a more stable diplomatic path between Washington and Havana.
