The British Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, expressed her shock over Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s mockery of the participants in the “Gaza Flotilla,” an incident that sparked a wave of escalating diplomatic condemnations inside and outside Europe.
Cooper stressed that what was contained in the circulated video clip is deemed “unacceptable,” emphasizing the necessity of treating all detainees with full respect in accordance with international law and humanitarian standards, amidst ongoing controversy regarding the detention of foreign activists who were part of the maritime convoy heading to the Gaza Strip.
Escalation of Official European Condemnations and Diplomatic Pressures
In recent hours, a wave of official European condemnations of the incident has escalated, amid demands to open investigations and clarify the circumstances surrounding the treatment of the flotilla participants. These diplomatic moves come in the context of a stricter European stance toward the overall developments related to the situation in the Gaza Strip.
In the same context, France summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest the actions attributed to Ben-Gvir, considering that what occurred does not comply with diplomatic and humanitarian standards in dealing with civilians and foreign activists.
Growing Tensions and Absence of Official Commentary from the Israeli Government
Relations between a number of European countries and Israel have been witnessing escalating tension recently, against the backdrop of the war in Gaza and its humanitarian repercussions, in addition to growing criticism of the Israeli government’s policies toward international events organized in solidarity with the Palestinians.
On the other hand, the Israeli government has not issued an extensive official comment regarding these criticisms, while Israeli officials continue to emphasize that the measures taken against the flotilla participants fall within security considerations related to preventing any breaches of the restrictions imposed on the Gaza Strip.
