Kabul – The risk of the deterioration of food security Afghanistan is escalating alarmingly in recent times. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned of an imminent famine threatening millions of citizens. Field reports indicate that women and children are the most affected group by this worsening humanitarian crisis. Thousands of helpless families are now unable to secure a single meal per day.

Causes of the Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

International organizations attributed this sharp decline to the deterioration of general economic conditions within the country. The reduction in international humanitarian aid deepens the daily suffering of the Afghan people. The capital, Kabul, and its surrounding provinces face highly complex political and security challenges. These difficult circumstances led to an unprecedented expansion of food poverty across the nation.

International donors suspended funding for several vital programs due to political reasons. This decision negatively impacted the capacity of UN agencies to distribute essential food rations. Repeated drought waves destroyed local agricultural crops and reduced livestock production. Prices of basic food commodities in local markets rose to record levels exceeding citizens’ purchasing power.

Suffering of Children and Pregnant Mothers

Afghan hospitals recorded a significant rise in acute malnutrition rates among young children. Cases of severe wasting and underweight are spreading frighteningly across all provinces. Pregnant and lactating mothers suffer from a complete absence of healthcare and lack necessary vitamins. This catastrophic situation threatens an entire generation of children with chronic stunting illnesses.

Field clinics require urgent supplies of therapeutic foods and fortified supplements. Doctors emphasize that the continuation of the current situation will increase mortality rates among newborns. Primitive medical facilities lack the essential medicines needed to save critical malnutrition cases.

International Calls to Save Kabul

The World Food Programme urges the international community to provide immediate and swift financial support. Relief efforts must be strengthened to avoid falling into the abyss of total famine. Experts believe that the solution requires a complete separation between humanitarian aid and existing political disputes. The issue of the deterioration of food security Afghanistan remains the largest humanitarian challenge for the United Nations.
