Ramallah – In a political scene reinforcing leadership continuity, the Palestinian National Liberation Movement “Fatah” unanimously re-elected President Mahmoud Abbas as its Chairman and General Commander on Thursday. The announcement was made during the opening session of the movement’s 8th General Conference in Ramallah, aimed at shaping the next phase of the Palestinian cause amidst regional challenges.
Broad Representation and Trans-border Technology
The conference commenced at the Palestinian Presidency headquarters with a wide diplomatic and national attendance, involving approximately 2,580 members. Fatah ensured comprehensive representation despite geographical barriers; members in the Gaza Strip, Cairo, and Beirut participated simultaneously via closed-circuit television to ensure full organizational engagement across all regions.
Steady Leadership and Organizational Milestones
President Abbas has led Fatah since the passing of founding leader Yasser Arafat in 2004, also serving as Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee and President of the State of Palestine. The conference is scheduled to last three days, with attention now turning to the remaining internal elections, including:
- Electing 80 members to the Revolutionary Council.
- Electing 18 members to the Central Committee.
- Updating organizational structures according to internal bylaws.
Through these elections, the conference seeks to inject new blood into the movement’s institutions, enhancing its ability to address upcoming national and political requirements while maintaining firm adherence to Palestinian national principles.
