London – Sky News reported on Saturday that British authorities have decided to transport passengers and crew members from the cruise ship “Hondius” to a specialized hospital in North West England. This measure aims to subject returnees to strict isolation protocols immediately upon their arrival in the UK, following the confirmed outbreak of the deadly “Hantavirus” aboard the vessel.
Medical Airlift and Stringent Precautionary Measures
The ship is expected to dock at the Port of Granadilla in Tenerife, Spain, on Sunday morning, ahead of the aerial repatriation of 22 British nationals. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed that London and Washington are executing emergency plans, while Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands have also dispatched medical evacuation planes. The European Union will provide two additional aircraft for other European citizens.
International Coordination Under WHO Oversight
The ship’s operator, “Oceanwide Expeditions,” confirmed that quarantine arrangements are being coordinated with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Spanish and Dutch authorities. While the company noted no new symptoms were reported as of Friday evening, international health agencies insist on rigorous medical surveillance due to the virus’s severity, which is typically transmitted via rodents and causes acute respiratory complications.
Global Health Concerns and High Alert
The outbreak on a multi-national vessel has triggered widespread international alarm, prompting involved nations to raise their health alert levels. Specialized agencies continue to monitor the epidemiological situation aboard the “Hondius,” focusing on the critical importance of “preventive isolation” to prevent the infection from reaching European and British soil and to contain any potential outbreak beyond the ship.
