Washington, DC – NATO allies are preparing for the possibility that US President Donald Trump will announce a further withdrawal of American troops from Europe.
This move is causing increasing concern among European allies about the future of the US commitment
to the continent’s security, according to Bloomberg, citing informed officials and diplomats.
The sources indicate that the Trump administration is considering a further reduction of US forces stationed in Europe,
following its recent decision to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany.
The sources also expect that potential reductions will include military bases in Italy.
Additionally, plans dating back to the Biden administration to deploy long-range missiles in Germany are under review.
Redeployment of US forces
Estimates suggest that the scenarios under consideration extend beyond simply reducing troop numbers.
They also include decreasing US participation in certain military exercises within Europe.
Furthermore, there is a potential redeployment of military units from countries
the Trump administration considers less supportive of US policies to those more aligned with Washington, such as Poland.

During a visit to Italy, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that the United States’ presence

In contrast, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized the importance
of a continued US military presence in Europe for the continent’s security and stability.
Internal constraints on Trump’s plans
The United States currently maintains approximately 85,000 troops in Europe, distributed across strategic bases
that play a key role in supporting US operations, deterring Russia, and reassuring Washington’s allies in Eastern Europe.
Despite European concerns, NATO officials believe that Trump’s ability to implement sweeping changes may face domestic constraints.
These constraints include laws passed by Congress to maintain a minimum US military presence in Europe.
Furthermore, the strategic importance of European bases to the United States is also a limiting factor.
