Brussels, Belgium – The European Commissioner for Defence warned of Russia’s continued military production advantage, asserting that Moscow still possesses a greater capacity to manufacture weapons and ammunition than EU member states. This comes at a time of escalating security challenges facing the European continent due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The European official explained that Russia has significantly expanded its military-industrial capabilities in recent years. Moscow has focused on producing ammunition, missiles, and drones at a rate exceeding that of many European countries combined. He also noted that this advantage is a growing concern for policymakers in Brussels.
He affirmed that the European Union has already begun taking steps to strengthen its defense industries by increasing military investments and encouraging European arms companies to boost production. In addition, the EU has worked to enhance defense cooperation among member states to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for military needs.
The European Commissioner for Defence pointed out that the Russian-Ukrainian war exposed significant weaknesses in the European military manufacturing system. He explained that this was particularly evident in the rapid supply of ammunition and military equipment. Consequently, these challenges have prompted European governments to reassess their security and defense strategies for the coming period.
He added that Europe needs to build a more resilient defense industrial base capable of responding quickly to crises. He also warned that the current gap could affect the continent’s readiness to face any future security threats.
These remarks come amid a growing debate within the European Union about the need to increase defense spending and strengthen joint military capabilities. This is occurring against a backdrop of escalating tensions with Russia and rising security challenges on the continent’s eastern borders.
