Beirut, Lebanon – The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that Lebanon is experiencing one of the most severe food insecurity crises in its history. This comes amid deteriorating economic and living conditions, and a widening range of humanitarian needs across the country.
Humanitarian needs are escalating
The program explained that it provides daily food assistance to approximately 600,000 people across Lebanon in an effort to mitigate the worsening crisis. The crisis is intensifying as economic and security pressures persist, pushing more people below the poverty line and increasing reliance on external aid.
The program noted that relief operations face significant funding challenges. This limits its ability to meet the growing demand for food assistance, particularly as the number of people in need expands and the purchasing power of citizens declines.
Agriculture and stability: the key to the solution
He pointed out that the damage inflicted on the agricultural sector has exacerbated the crisis. Domestic production has declined significantly, increasing reliance on aid. He stressed that a fundamental solution hinges on achieving security and a ceasefire, given that the current situation on the ground is severely hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid and impeding the continuation of relief operations.
