Tehran, Iran – CNN, citing informed Iranian sources, reported that a delegation from Tehran will travel to Islamabad on Tuesday for talks with US officials.
This move comes in an attempt to revive stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran
and amid signs of renewed diplomatic efforts to break the current deadlock.
High-level Iranian delegation
Sources expect the Iranian delegation to include the same team that participated in the last round of talks,
headed by Abbas Araqchi and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
This reflects Tehran’s seriousness in pushing for a resumption of dialogue.
However, there has been no official confirmation yet from the Iranian side regarding the delegation’s departure for Pakistan.
Expected announcement of a ceasefire extension
Sources indicated that a symbolic joint statement extending the current ceasefire is likely to be announced on Wednesday.
This move is seen as a step to create a conducive environment for continued negotiations.
The announcement is viewed more as a political signal than a detailed agreement, but it could help to temporarily stabilize the truce.
Possibility of a joint presidential meeting
Sources indicated that if tangible progress is made during the talks, and Donald Trump agrees to travel to Islamabad,
a joint presidential meeting with his Iranian counterpart could be held to sign what is known as the “Islamabad Declaration.”
This step could represent a significant shift in the course of relations between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Trump announced that a team of senior US officials will travel to Pakistan this week to resume negotiations.
He also indicated that Special Envoy Steve Wittkopf will arrive in Islamabad on Monday evening,
in preparation for the second round of peace talks scheduled for Tuesday.
