Baghdad – Iraq – The Afro-Asian Parliament expressed deep concern on Tuesday over the failure of the United Nations Security Council to adopt a resolution calling on Iran to refrain from obstructing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The Parliament stressed that this failure undermines international efforts to maintain the stability of vital routes and global supply chains.
Flaws in Decision-Making Mechanisms
The First Deputy Speaker of the council, Saud Rashid Al-Hajilan, said that the Security Council’s failure reflects deep flaws in decision-making mechanisms. He said it also calls for urgent international parliamentary action, in coordination with the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other parliamentary bodies. According to him, this action should pressure governments to correct the Council’s course. In addition, it should ensure the Security Council fulfills its role in supporting global security and stability.
Iranian Threats to International Navigation
Al-Hajilan added that Iranian attacks on Gulf states and Jordan, including targeting ships and maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz, pose a direct threat to peace and security in the region and the world. These actions also undermine international navigation. He stressed that these actions constitute a blatant violation of international law. Moreover, they are a threat to regional and global security.
Call to Secure and Keep Straits Open
The parliament also denounced the Security Council’s failure to pass the draft resolution aimed at securing and keeping navigation open in the Strait of Hormuz. The parliament expressed deep concern over Iran’s recent escalation and emphasized the need to intensify international efforts to ensure freedom of navigation and the stability of vital maritime routes. The Afro-Asian parliamentary council also called for enhanced international cooperation to prevent disruption to global trade. Furthermore, they urged action to protect energy supplies and maintain regional stability.
