London, UK – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK expressed their deep concern over the escalating violence in Lebanon.
They called for the avoidance of any Israeli ground offensive that could further deteriorate the humanitarian and security situation in the region.
This came in a joint statement from the five countries, in which they stressed
the need to contain the current escalation and prevent a wider conflict.
Such an escalation could threaten regional stability. Moreover, the violence poses a threat to security in the region.
Warning of an Israeli ground attack
The statement stressed the need to avoid any Israeli ground operation inside Lebanese territory.
It warned that such a move could have serious humanitarian consequences and exacerbate the suffering of civilians.
It noted that expanding the scope of military operations could increase the scale of destruction and loss of life.
Furthermore, it could expose the region to the risk of a prolonged escalation of the current violence.
Fears of a protracted conflict
The five countries stressed that any ground attack on Lebanon could lead to a protracted conflict that would be difficult to contain.
This would have security, political, and humanitarian repercussions for Lebanon and the entire region.
The statement added that the international community is watching developments with growing concern.
This comes amid continued military tensions and cross-border attacks, as well as escalating violence within Lebanon.
Call for a political solution
The signatory states called on Israel and Lebanon to engage in negotiations
aimed at reaching a sustainable political solution that would end the current escalation.
They also stressed the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
This would contribute to stability and prevent the situation from spiraling
into a wider confrontation in the region, especially given the spread of violence.
