Baghdad, Iraq – Kurdish political forces in Iraq have called for the swift nomination of their candidate for the presidency. This comes as they seek to resolve internal disputes before political alliances fracture, potentially impacting the formation of the next government. The call comes amid mounting pressure on political blocs after months of stagnation and waiting. There are concerns that the opportunity to elect a Kurdish candidate to the presidency may be lost.
A senior Kurdish official emphasized that “the situation cannot tolerate further delays.” He also warned that continued procrastination could weaken the Kurdish position in upcoming negotiations. Furthermore, he argued that further delays increase the likelihood of other parties dominating key state positions.

Regional and international pressures

The Iraqi political scene is witnessing fierce competition among political forces, with each side striving to secure a strategic position before the upcoming parliamentary elections. Meanwhile, the Iraqi public is anxiously observing the continued divisions and delays in making crucial decisions. There is a palpable sense of frustration with the political performance.
Analysts emphasize that the Kurds’ stance will be a significant indicator of the coalitions’ ability to reach consensus. Furthermore, this stance could determine the course of the political process in Baghdad, especially given the increasing regional and international pressure to support Iraq’s stability. The goal is to prevent a slide into a new crisis.
