Manila, Philippines – The Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for attacks it said it carried out in the Munay and Datu Hoover regions of the southern Philippines, alleging that the attacks killed six Philippine soldiers. This claim was made in a statement published on its media platforms.
According to the group, the attacks targeted Philippine military personnel during military operations in the two regions, which are located on the island of Mindanao. This area has witnessed years of activity by armed groups linked to extremist organizations. ISIS claimed the attacks were part of what it described as “ongoing operations” against government forces.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the Philippine military regarding the veracity of these claims. Independent sources have also been unable to verify the number of casualties or the details of the attacks mentioned by the group. Philippine security sources have previously stated that militant groups have a history of exaggerating government troop losses for propaganda and media purposes.
Several areas in the southern Philippines, particularly in Mindanao, face ongoing security challenges. This comes despite years of intensive military campaigns by the government to curb the activities of armed groups, particularly those affiliated with ISIS, which seek to assert their presence through sporadic attacks targeting the army and police.
Philippine authorities have repeatedly affirmed that the operational capabilities of these groups have significantly diminished as a result of ongoing security and military operations. However, they have also warned of the continued threat of limited attacks and hit-and-run tactics in mountainous and remote areas.
ISIS’s announcement is part of its repeated attempts to demonstrate its presence in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, the Philippine government continues to coordinate with its regional and international partners to strengthen counterterrorism efforts and prevent the group’s resurgence or expansion in the region.
