World Food Programme: School meals in Afghanistan save the lives of thousands of children

Kabul, Afghanistan – The World Food Programme (WFP) has confirmed that school meal programs in Afghanistan play a vital role in protecting thousands of children. These meals often constitute their main meal during the school day.

In a report released Wednesday, the WFP explained that collaboration with local and international partners has enabled them to support the health and education of children in primary schools across Afghanistan, amidst the country’s challenging circumstances.

UNICEF estimates that some 942,000 children in Afghanistan suffer from acute malnutrition. Furthermore, approximately 700,000 others are at risk of moderate malnutrition, making school feeding programs essential to mitigate health problems and enhance learning opportunities.

The WFP added that more than 17 million Afghans face food insecurity this winter, with hunger and malnutrition rates rising across the country. The United Nations has repeatedly emphasized that continued assistance and expanded nutrition programs can reduce the risks to children and ensure they can better access education, which is crucial for their future.

Supporting school feeding is a key component of humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan. The international community is striving to ensure aid reaches the most affected areas and provides a safe learning and health environment for children, despite the challenges of poverty, drought, and recurring natural disasters.

These initiatives come at a time when the country faces multiple challenges in food security and education. These include the impact of the recent earthquakes in northern Afghanistan, which have exacerbated the suffering of the population, and educational restrictions that prevent some girls from accessing schools.
