US President Donald Trump said that US Navy warships are currently en route to Iran in preparation for any potential developments in the region. This comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, “As you know, we have many ships headed there in case of any contingency. We have a large fleet heading to the region, and we’ll see what happens. We have a large force heading towards Iran. I’d prefer nothing to happen, but we’re watching them very closely.”
Trump had escalated his rhetoric against Iran several days earlier, warning that the United States would “obliterate Iran from the face of the earth” if his life were threatened. These remarks were described as unprecedentedly harsh.
In the same vein, Trump attacked his predecessor, President Joe Biden, claiming his administration had pursued a “weak and lenient” policy toward Tehran. He said, “We were always wondering why Biden wasn’t saying anything? If I had been in the White House then, and if they had threatened anyone—not necessarily the president, but anyone—as they did to me, I would have given them a very harsh blow.”
Trump’s remarks come days after a warning issued by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who asserted that Iran was prepared to teach Trump an “unforgettable lesson” should he decide to attack the Islamic Republic.
The Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee also warned of the repercussions of any US military action. This comes amid an unprecedented escalation of tensions between the two countries, fueled by an exchange of direct threats. Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, have indicated that any targeting of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would be considered a declaration of all-out war and would necessitate a large-scale response.
This escalation comes at a time of cautious anticipation in the region. There are also international concerns that the situation could slide into an open military confrontation between the two sides.
