Damascus, Syria – The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported Saturday evening that the explosion heard earlier in Damascus was caused by a missile of unknown origin that landed near Mezzeh Military Airport, causing no damage.
The agency quoted a Syrian security source as saying, “A missile of unknown origin landed near Mezzeh Military Airport in Damascus.” The source confirmed that “there were no injuries or material damage.”
Earlier on Saturday, the agency reported hearing an explosion in the vicinity of the Mezzeh district in the Syrian capital. It confirmed that authorities had launched an immediate investigation to determine the nature and cause of the explosion.
The Mezzeh district, located west of Damascus, houses a number of security sites, as well as embassies and international organizations. This is not the first time an explosion has occurred in this area.
Last Monday, Syrian media reported hearing an explosion in the vicinity of the Mezzeh district in Damascus. This was attributed to military exercises.
On December 7th, an explosion also occurred in the Syrian capital, caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a car near the Four Seasons Hotel in the city center. No injuries were reported at the time, and security forces quickly cordoned off the area and launched a comprehensive investigation.
On November 14th, the Mezzeh 86 district, specifically the Ain al-Krum neighborhood, was targeted by a rocket fired from a mobile platform.
Similarly, in August, an old car rigged with an IED exploded on a street in the Mezzeh district. No injuries were reported.
