Bangkok, Thailand – The Thai Defense Minister emphasized that the ceasefire agreement with Cambodia does not represent a retreat or surrender. He stressed that the decision is part of a strategic approach aimed at protecting national security and maintaining regional stability.
The minister explained in official statements that the political and military leadership in Bangkok made the decision to de-escalate out of its responsibility to the Thai people. He emphasized that seeking to halt the escalation does not diminish the army’s strength or readiness, but rather reflects the state’s wisdom in crisis management.
He noted that the Thai armed forces retain their full defensive capabilities and are able to protect national sovereignty at any time. He added that the agreement offers both sides a genuine opportunity to reduce tensions and opens channels for dialogue, thus avoiding military confrontations.
The defense minister added that his country prefers diplomatic and political solutions to border disputes, especially given the current regional challenges. He also emphasized that stability is a top priority for Thailand and its partners in the region.
The ceasefire agreement comes at a time when relations between Bangkok and Phnom Penh are focused on containing border tensions. This is happening amid regional and international calls for de-escalation, with efforts to transform the situation into a lasting political process that guarantees the security and stability of Southeast Asia.
