Baghdad, Iraq – The Iraqi Islamic Dawa Party announced on Saturday its nomination of its Secretary-General, Nouri al-Maliki, for the position of Prime Minister.
This move comes in the wake of the recent parliamentary elections and is expected to significantly intensify competition and disagreements within the Shiite political alliances and forces in Iraq.
The nomination of Maliki, who served as prime minister for two consecutive terms (2006-2014), is a move that could further complicate the task of forming the next government.
Observers note that the Dawa Party’s nomination of Maliki at this stage will complicate reaching a consensus on the next prime minister. It could also lead to sharp disagreements within the Iraqi Shia political bloc, which is striving to form the largest coalition capable of securing a parliamentary majority.
