Tel Aviv, Israel – The newspaper “Israel Hayom” revealed that the attempted assassination of the Israeli ambassador to Mexico has brought renewed attention to the expansion of Iran’s terrorist network in Latin America, confirming that Tehran has turned the continent into one of the world’s main centers of terrorism.
The newspaper stated that Iran is exploiting the weakness of local security services and Shiite communities spread across a number of South American countries, along with a network of religious and propaganda centers, to carry out operations targeting Israeli and Jewish interests in the region, noting that this activity comes within the framework of what it described as the “open account” between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
The newspaper noted that the assassination attempt in Mexico represents a new episode in the Iranian campaign of revenge that escalated after the Gaza war, explaining that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has relied for years on proxy forces or local gangs to conceal its direct role in these operations.
For its part, the Iranian embassy in Mexico denied the reports of a plot to assassinate the Israeli ambassador, asserting in a statement that the news was “completely false” and that respecting Mexican laws is a top priority for Tehran.
The report added that security services in a number of countries, including Greece, Germany, Brazil and Peru, had uncovered during the past year cells linked to Iran and Hezbollah that planned to target Israeli interests.
According to the newspaper, Venezuela is considered the most prominent base for Iran’s operations in South America, benefiting from its alliance with President Nicolas Maduro. However, political changes and the rise of right-wing governments in some countries of the continent, along with increasing US pressure on Caracas, threaten Iranian influence in the region.
Israel Hayom concluded its report by emphasizing that the attempted assassination of the Israeli ambassador in Mexico demonstrates the continued Iranian activity in South America, calling for international and regional coordination to confront this influence, which it considered a direct threat to global security.
