America – New York City has officially begun electing a new mayor, with the race being led by 34-year-old Representative Zahran Mamdani, who represents Queens in the state legislature.

He is a leader in the left wing of the Democratic Party.

Mamdani is the favorite to win the elections scheduled for November 4, 2025, according to projections.

This comes after his huge victory in the party’s primary elections.

According to reports published by Reuters and the Washington Post, Mamdani is considered one of the most prominent progressive figures in the Democratic Party.

It adopts a political agenda that focuses on reducing the cost of living, freezing rents, and expanding free public transportation services.

In addition to promoting social justice in one of the most unequal cities in the United States.

Who is Zahran Mamdani?

Zahran Kwame Mamdani was born in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, in 1991, to a prominent academic and cultural family.

His father is the renowned thinker Mahmood Mamdani, one of the most prominent theorists of African studies,

and his mother is the Indian director Mira Nair, who has made internationally acclaimed films.

Zohran moved to the United States as a child, and studied political science and African studies at Bowdoin College,

This was before he began his career as a social activist working in the field of housing and helping low-income people in New York.

In 2020, Mamdani was elected to the New York State Legislative Assembly,

He became known as a representative of the progressive movement within the Democratic Party.

Close to the faction represented by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

His cultural background

Despite his multicultural background (Indian on his mother’s side, Muslim on his father’s side),

Mamdani describes himself as a “democratic socialist” who seeks to build a more equal and just city.

If he wins, Zohran Mamdani will be the first Muslim and the first Indian-American to serve as mayor of New York in its history.

In a move that represents a political shift that reflects the city’s diversity and changing social landscape.
