Tel Aviv, Israel – US Vice President J.D. Vance arrives in Israel on Wednesday. His visit aims to salvage the fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This comes amid escalating tensions and mutual accusations of violations of the agreement.

According to the New York Times, the visit is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to preserve the agreement, which it considers a pivotal element of its comprehensive post-war plan for Gaza.

Post-war plan

Trump’s 20-point plan includes the formation of a temporary foreign administration to manage the Gaza Strip. Additionally, international forces will be deployed to ensure stability and work to completely disarm Hamas.

Vance’s visit is part of intensive US diplomatic efforts to advance this plan, despite political and security challenges on the ground.

The Israeli government announced that Vance’s visit would last “several days.” However, details of the negotiations or his official meetings have not yet been revealed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met a few days ago with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Trump advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner also attended the meeting, in an attempt to consolidate the ceasefire and contain the recent escalation.

Field escalation despite the truce

The latest tensions came after the Israeli military announced on October 19 that Palestinian militants had opened fire on Israeli forces in the Rafah area in the southern Gaza Strip. Two soldiers were killed and a third seriously wounded. Israel responded with intensive airstrikes on sites in Gaza.

For its part, Hamas denied responsibility for the incident. The movement affirmed its full commitment to the ceasefire agreement, warning against any steps that could lead to the collapse of the fragile understandings.

The future of the agreement is at stake

Vance’s visit is seen as a serious test of the US administration’s ability to impose stability in Gaza within its new political vision, especially given the significant challenges facing Palestinian factions regarding their acceptance of US conditions. Furthermore, Israel rejects any settlement that allows Hamas to play a role in the next phase.
