Washington, D.C. – Behind many of the greatest space discoveries are names that haven’t received the recognition they deserve.

Among the most prominent is American astronomer Nancy Grace Roman,

whose name is synonymous with the founding of NASA’s space telescope program.

She played a pivotal role in the creation of the Hubble Space Telescope.

Roman was born in 1925 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her interest in stars and astronomy began in childhood.

At a young age, she and a group of friends formed a stargazing club.

Later, her passion evolved into an academic and professional pursuit.

She studied astronomy at Swarthmore College and earned her doctorate from the University of Chicago.

She then worked in astronomical research before joining NASA shortly after the agency’s founding.

Building scientific programs

At NASA, Roman became the first female astronomer. She also played an influential role in developing the agency’s scientific plans,

especially with regard to launching space observatories that could study the universe away

from the interference resulting from the Earth’s atmosphere.

The Large Space Telescope project was one of the most prominent files I worked on.

It contributed to mobilizing scientists and engineers and securing the necessary support and funding for the project.

Eventually, the ambitious idea turned into the Hubble Telescope.

NASA scientist Ed Weiler called her “Hubble’s mother” in recognition of her role in moving the project forward.

However, the telescope’s construction and launch were the product of the efforts of generations of scientists and engineers.

Roman importance was not related to Hubble alone. It helped establish the idea of using space telescopes to study the universe.

It contributed to building scientific programs that paved the way for a series of observatories

that changed scientists’ understanding of stars, galaxies, and cosmic phenomena.

The telescope for studying the mysteries of the universe

Roman passed away in December 2018 at the age of 93. Despite her death, her scientific legacy remains strong.

In 2020, NASA announced that its new space telescope would be named the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in her honor.

The new telescope aims to study some of the universe’s greatest mysteries, including the nature of dark energy.

It will also observe galaxies and stars and search for exoplanets.

Thus, Nancy Grace Roman’s name has moved from the pages of NASA’s history to the cosmos itself.

A new telescope bears the name of the woman who, decades ago,

believed that the best way to understand the universe was to look up at it from beyond Earth.
