Al Ain, UAE – The National Center for Space Science and Technology at the United Arab Emirates University announced the success of the “Lyonav-1” mission in achieving a new phase of its operational objectives. This is after successfully verifying the performance of the navigation payload and receiving and processing signals sent from low Earth orbit. In an achievement that represents an important milestone in the development of future space navigation technologies. It reflects the importance of national partnership in supporting strategic space projects.

The mission was launched on July 7, 2026, with support and funding from the Emirates Space Agency.

Investing in national competencies

This achievement confirms the mission’s success in moving from the launch and initial operation phase to the phase of achieving its technical objectives. This supports the development of navigation technologies from low Earth orbit and enhances the UAE’s efforts to build innovative solutions. Contributes to the development of the next generation of navigation and positioning systems.

This achievement embodies the fruits of investment in national competencies and qualitative international partnerships. Emirati engineers and researchers at the National Center for Space Science and Technology lead the satellite’s operations and monitor its performance. From the mission development and testing phases, to operating the satellite and monitoring its performance in orbit. To enhance the expertise of Emirati talent in developing and operating navigation systems and satellites.

The Leonav-1 mission also embodies a model of international cooperation in developing space technologies.
