Dubai, UAE – Emirates Airlines and South African Airways announced, on Wednesday, the expansion of their token exchange partnership to include nine additional destinations. Providing travelers with wider options and easier and smoother connecting journeys across central and southern Africa.
This is a step that inaugurates the work of a mutual agreement between the two carriers.

Under the new agreement, after obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals, Emirates will place its code on flights operated by South African Airways. This allows its customers to access more destinations within South Africa and its neighboring countries.
This expansion includes nine new routes, distributed among three internal routes in South Africa linking the city of Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth. Six regional routes connect Johannesburg to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Gaborone in Botswana. Windhoek in Namibia, Lusaka in Zambia, along with Harare and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
Completing the partnership
This step comes as a continuation of the existing partnership between the two sides. Since the launch of the partnership, South African Airways has placed its symbol on flights operated by Emirates Airlines between Dubai and Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. It also allowed its customers, under the interline agreement between the two carriers, to travel via Dubai to 68 destinations within Emirates’ global network.
It is worth noting that Emirates Airlines began serving South Africa in 1995. With the launch of its first flights to Johannesburg, it later expanded its market operations by adding Cape Town and Durban to its network of destinations.
The tanker has since succeeded in transporting more than 20 million passengers to and from South Africa. It currently operates 56 flights per week through these three destinations.
