Damascus, Syria – The dismissal of 95 employees at the Syrian Petroleum Company has sparked widespread criticism. This follows accusations that the mass layoffs were carried out without due process and without regard for legal and administrative safeguards. Consequently, there are calls for a review and reconsideration of the decision.

Workers and union representatives have expressed their rejection of the implementation mechanism, arguing that dismissing such a large number of employees at once raises questions about the criteria the company used. This is particularly concerning given the difficult economic conditions in the country and the impact the decision will have on the employees and their families.

Labor unions called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the decision, ensuring the company’s compliance with labor laws and regulations, and guaranteeing employees the right to appeal dismissal decisions through established legal channels.

In response, the Syrian Petroleum Company explained that the measures it took were part of a review of employee conditions and the implementation of approved administrative procedures. It asserted that all decisions were issued in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, serving the best interests of the company and enhancing performance within the institution.

These developments come at a time when public institutions in Syria are undergoing efforts to restructure certain sectors and improve administrative performance. This is occurring amidst calls for a balance between the demands of administrative reform, the preservation of employee rights, and the guarantee of job security.
