Cairo, Egypt – The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum announced on Wednesday a new natural gas discovery in the Western Desert by Khalda Petroleum Company. Production commenced from the new well at a rate of approximately 40 million cubic feet of gas per day.
The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum stated in a press release that the discovery was made through drilling the deep exploratory well “Watda” to a depth of approximately 15,000 feet. Additionally, it clarified that Khalda Petroleum Company is a joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Apache Corporation.
Electrical logging of the well showed positive indications confirming the presence of gas-bearing structures. At the same time, final production tests, conducted immediately after drilling, yielded a production rate of 40 million cubic feet of gas per day. This demonstrates the promising potential of the well and reinforces efforts to increase domestic production.
In parallel with the drilling and testing operations, the company completed a new 10-km production line at an investment of $2.3 million. This enabled faster production transfer and connection of the well to existing infrastructure. It is part of a plan to accelerate the development of new discoveries and bring them into production.
According to the statement, actual production and gas pumping from the new well commenced yesterday. Its connection to the national gas grid will be completed before the end of July, in accordance with the targeted timeline. This will contribute to supporting the gas supply system. Furthermore, it confirms the continued success of efforts to intensify exploration activities in the Western Desert to bolster Egypt’s energy reserves.
