Munich, Germany – Munich Airport in Germany experienced a security alert on Saturday, May 30, 2026, leading to a complete suspension of air traffic. This followed reports of an unidentified drone being spotted in the vicinity of the airport’s airspace.

The stands were closed as a precautionary measure.

A German police spokesperson told AFP that two pilots reported seeing a flying object suspected to be a drone shortly after 9:00 a.m. Upon receiving the report, security authorities immediately closed the runways to takeoffs and landings, in close coordination with German air traffic control. The aim of this decision was to ensure the safety of passengers and aircraft.

A security spokesperson at the scene stated, “In coordination with air traffic control, the runways have been closed to ensure safety. The duration of this closure is currently unknown.” A large number of police officers are present in the vicinity of the airport, conducting a thorough search to determine the source of the flying object.

Repeated security incidents

This incident comes amid renewed concerns about air traffic safety in Munich, where the airport experienced a similar closure twice within just 24 hours last October due to the sighting of suspected drones. This raises serious questions about the effectiveness of security measures in place to counter this type of threat.

It is worth noting that Munich Airport has previously experienced disruptions to air traffic due to labor strikes, but today’s suspension has a sensitive security dimension related to the safety of the airspace.

Ongoing coverage

As of the time of this report, authorities have not announced when flights will resume, nor has any information been released regarding the identity of the aircraft operators or the motives behind this security breach.

Reports from the airport indicate a state of anticipation in the waiting areas. Airport management has promised to provide passengers with immediate updates as the situation develops. This is a developing story, and our editorial team is monitoring the situation closely to provide further details as they become available from German authorities.
