Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates — Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) today announced the results of its initial operational assessments following the recent attacks on its site in Al Taweelah. The site is one of the world’s largest industrial complexes for aluminium production.
The company stated that the site sustained significant damage as a result of missile and drone attacks on the Khalifa Economic Zone (KIZAD). This necessitated the complete evacuation of the site and the implementation of an emergency shutdown of all its facilities. The shutdown included the aluminum smelter, the foundry, the power plant, the Al Taweelah alumina refinery, and the Al Taweelah recycling plant.
Restarting the fuse
She added that restarting the smelter would require repairing the damaged infrastructure. Additionally, the reduction cells would need to be brought back online gradually. She anticipated that a full return to primary aluminum production would take up to 12 months, based on initial indicators.
The company indicated that some production operations at the Al Taweelah alumina refinery and the Al Taweelah recycling plant may resume sooner. This depends on the results of the final damage assessment.
Targeting employees
The company quoted its CEO, Abdulnasser bin Kalban, condemning the attack that targeted employees while they were performing their daily duties, noting that the site’s workforce represents more than 40 nationalities. He also expressed his gratitude for everyone’s safety and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
Bin Kalban emphasized that the Al Taweelah site is a cornerstone of global supply chains. However, he cautioned that the repercussions of the attack could extend to a number of industries worldwide. He stressed that the safety and security of employees remains a top priority. The company continues to support its customers and maintain direct communication with those affected by any potential order delays.
Long smelter production
According to the company, the Al Taweelah smelter produced approximately 1.6 million tons of cast aluminum in 2025. Emirates Global Aluminium maintains substantial stockpiles of the metal both within the UAE and at its international sites. Additionally, there are ongoing shipments. The Al Taweelah alumina refinery produced 2.4 million tons in 2025, representing 46% of the company’s total alumina requirements. The Al Taweelah recycling plant has an annual production capacity of 185,000 tons.
