Damascus, Syria – The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdul Qader al-Hasriya, announced today, Thursday, that January 1, 2026 will be the official date for launching the new Syrian currency.

He announced the start of the process of replacing old banknotes, stressing that the process will be “smooth and organized” and based on standards of transparency and clarity.

“Cash birth” decree

In an official statement, Al-Hasriya welcomed the issuance of Decree No. 293 of 2025 concerning the “birth of the new Syrian currency”.

He described it as a national milestone that lays the foundation for a new economic and monetary phase in the country’s history.

The exclusive report explained that the decree granted the central bank full authority to determine the deadlines for the exchange and its locations.

This ensures proper implementation and facilitates procedures for citizens in various Syrian regions.

He noted that the executive regulations will be issued by official decision soon.

Central Bank on high alert

The governor revealed that work will continue at the central bank during the days of December 25 and 27 to follow up on the final preparations.

This is in preparation for holding a press conference dedicated to explaining the mechanisms of change and strengthening trust and partnership with citizens.

Reassurance to investors and citizens

The Central Bank had reassured citizens and investors in a previous statement (December 18),

This means that all current banking transactions are proceeding as usual without any impact.

He confirmed that the details and technical specifications of the currency will be announced as soon as the necessary arrangements are completed.

It is worth noting that this step comes within the framework of modernizing the Syrian monetary system, amid widespread anticipation from the Syrian public.

This is to familiarize people with the new currency denominations and their purchasing power during the transitional phase the country is going through.
