Algeria – European traders revealed on Wednesday that the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC) had purchased large quantities of durum wheat. This transaction, conducted through an international tender that closed on Tuesday, aims to bolster the country’s strategic reserves of this essential commodity.
Details of quantities and estimated prices
According to initial estimates reported by economic news agencies, the quantity purchased ranges from 500,000 to 550,000 tons.
The estimated purchase price for Panamax vessels (large cargoes) is approximately $315 per ton (including cost and freight). Meanwhile, prices for Handimax vessels (smaller cargoes) range between $323 and $324 per ton (including cost and freight).
Shipping schedule
The Algerian tender requested that the purchased quantities be supplied during four main time periods in the first quarter of next year, 2026. The periods are from the beginning of February until the 15th, from the 16th of February until the end of the month, from the beginning of March until the middle of the month, and finally from the 16th of March until the end of March.
Secrecy policy
It is worth noting that the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC) does not officially announce the results of its tenders. The international grain market relies on estimates from traders and experts to determine prices and quantities purchased. More precise details regarding the final origin of the wheat (likely from Canada, Mexico, or other Mediterranean countries) are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
