Turbotim to Swap Diesel Generators for Solar and Battery Power in Major Decarbonization Push

RAS AL KHAIMAH, UAE — Turbotim, a UAE-based energy services company, has signed an agreement with Emerge, the joint venture between Masdar and France’s EDF Group, to install rooftop solar panels and battery storage systems at its Ras Al Khaimah facilities — a move expected to cut more than 2,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The deal, announced at the Make it in the Emirates Forum, will replace diesel generators with a hybrid system combining 1.52 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar photovoltaic panels and 5 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage. Under a 20-year contract, Emerge will handle the full project, including financing, design, procurement, construction, operations, and maintenance.

According to the companies, the shift to solar and battery power will deliver major energy cost savings for Turbotim, alongside environmental benefits equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 240 homes or taking 474 petrol-powered cars off the road.

Industry analysts say the project reflects a broader push by UAE industrial players to decarbonize operations and align with national clean energy targets.

“By integrating solar and battery storage, Turbotim is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also achieving long-term energy savings and greater energy independence,” said Dr. Saad Al Tameemi, Turbotim’s chairman.

Michel Abi Saab, general manager of Emerge, said the agreement showcases the role distributed solar and storage systems can play in cutting fossil fuel dependence for industrial users.

Emerge, established in 2021, has delivered clean energy solutions to more than 40 commercial, industrial, education, and hospitality sites across the Gulf. The company focuses on distributed solar, battery storage, off-grid solar, and hybrid solutions for clients looking to reduce emissions and energy costs.

With the UAE pushing to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, projects like Turbotim’s are expected to become increasingly common across the country’s industrial sector.
