Syria – Two senior officials, one from the Middle East and the other a Syrian security official, said that Syria had thwarted two separate ISIS plots to target President Ahmed al-Sharaa. This reflects a personal dimension to the threats facing the Syrian leadership.

The two sources told Reuters that the two plots, which aimed to assassinate President al-Sharaa, were foiled in recent months. This underscores the direct threat facing al-Sharaa as he seeks to consolidate his power in a country ravaged by a 14-year civil war.

The officials indicated that these plots come in the context of al-Sharaa’s plans to join a US-led international coalition to fight the extremist group, which is engaged in a protracted conflict in Syria.

These developments reflect the significant security challenges facing the Syrian leadership. This is occurring amidst the continued activity of armed groups and regional tensions that are impacting the country’s stability.
