Rotterdam, Netherlands – The name of veteran Dutch coach Henk ten Cate, 71, has sparked widespread controversy in the Dutch media in recent hours. This comes after media reports linked him to a horrific assault on the famous model Sylvia Gersen in a Rotterdam café.
Details of the incident: Assault and intimidation with a weapon
According to RealityFBI, a 40-year-old Dutch model was violently assaulted inside a café on Bergsee Dorpstraat. A statement released by Dutch police on Sunday indicated that an unidentified man punched and kicked Jersen, and then dragged her to the ground. Her management reported that the assailant brandished a firearm before fleeing the scene, causing panic among those present. Fortunately, reports confirmed that Jersen’s injuries were minor and did not require hospitalization.
Allegations haunt the Dutch coach
The news didn’t stop at the assault itself; it extended to coach Henk ten Cate, currently the manager of the Suriname national team. The veteran coach was accused of “helping” the assailant escape from the scene. This placed him in the spotlight as a potential accomplice, a development that shocked the sporting community, which is well aware of ten Cate’s long and distinguished career.
Tin Cat responded: “I was there to calm things down.”
In his first comments on the allegations during an appearance on the program “De Oranjezomer,” Ten Cate admitted to being at the café at the time of the incident but vehemently denied the accusations against him. In a brief statement, Ten Cate said, “Yes, I was there. I helped calm things down a bit.” He added, attempting to downplay the situation, “I don’t want to make a big deal out of this because it wasn’t that serious. I want to leave it at that.”
A distinguished coaching career: from Barcelona to the Gulf
Henk ten Cate boasts a career spanning from the 1980s, transitioning from player to coach of considerable stature in Europe. His star rose significantly as Frank Rijkaard’s assistant at Barcelona, where he was seen as the mastermind who compensated for Rijkaard’s tactical weaknesses. This led to Rijkaard winning the Champions League and two La Liga titles. He also gained coaching experience with giants like Chelsea and Ajax Amsterdam, where he won the Dutch Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield.
In the Arab world, Ten Cate had several notable stints; he began his journey in the region with Al-Ahli of the UAE (2009-2010). He then had a brief spell in the Saudi Professional League with Al-Ittihad during the 2019-2020 season, which consisted of only 11 matches. His last title in the UAE was won with Al-Jazira in the 2016-2017 season.
Present and future: Stumbling with Suriname
Ten Cate has been managing the Suriname national team since last December, in an ambitious mission that has not been entirely successful. He failed to lead the team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals after a crushing defeat to Bolivia in the semi-finals of the qualifiers. While the public awaits further details from the investigation into the Rotterdam incident, Ten Cate’s professional future remains contingent on a full picture emerging of what transpired in that café.
