Nyon, Switzerland – UEFA announced on Sunday the cancellation of the Finalissima Cup match between European champions Spain and South American champions Argentina. The match was scheduled to take place on March 27 in Qatar. The cancellation is due to the ongoing war in the Middle East.
UEFA explained in a statement, as reported in the press, that it was not possible to reach an agreement with the Argentine Football Association regarding an alternative date for the match. This occurred despite several proposals to salvage the fixture. These proposals included holding the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. Alternatively, they proposed organizing it as a home-and-away fixture between Madrid and Buenos Aires. However, these solutions did not result in a final agreement between the two parties.
The Finalissima is an official match between the UEFA European Championship (Euro) champion and the Copa América champion. It is organized jointly by UEFA and CONMEBOL. The event aims to strengthen cooperation between the two continents at the national team level. The tournament is typically a single match, and if the score is tied after regulation time, the winner is decided by a penalty shootout.
The tournament has historical significance, having previously been known as the Artemio Franchi Cup. Two editions were held in 1985 and 1993 before its revival in 2022 under the name “Finalissima.” Previous editions saw France defeat Uruguay in 1985. In 1993, Argentina won over Denmark on penalties. Argentina then reclaimed the title in 2022 with a resounding 3-0 win against Italy at Wembley Stadium in London. The planned 2026 edition was expected to feature a clash between Spain, the reigning European champions (Euro 2024), and Argentina, the reigning Copa América champions (Copa América 2024). This highly anticipated matchup was ultimately canceled.
