Rabat, Morocco – FIFA President Gianni Infantino criticized the events that took place during the Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal, describing them as “unacceptable”.
The Senegalese national team won the Africa Cup of Nations title for the second time in its history, after defeating its Moroccan counterpart by one goal to nil, in a match that extended into extra time.
The match was marred by controversy and chaos after the referee awarded a penalty to Morocco in stoppage time. This came just minutes after a goal for Senegal was disallowed, leading to widespread protests against the refereeing decisions.
Some Senegal players left the pitch in protest against the referee’s decisions. However, team captain Sadio Mane intervened, urging his teammates to return and complete the match. The “Lions of Teranga” eventually returned and went on to win the title.
Infantino commented on the events of the match via his official Instagram account, saying: “Congratulations to Senegal on being crowned champions of Africa and winning the African Cup of Nations title after their victory in the final match against Morocco in Rabat”.
He added: “I extend my best wishes to Abdoulaye Fall, President of the Senegalese Football Federation, and to all those who contributed to this achievement”.
The FIFA president also praised Morocco, saying: “We commend Morocco for organizing a fantastic tournament, both as runners-up and as a distinguished host. I extend my thanks to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his continued support of football, and to Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Moroccan Football Federation, for his leadership and commitment to developing the game”.
Infantino: What happened in the Africa Cup of Nations final is unacceptable
In contrast, Infantino expressed his displeasure with some of the scenes that marred the final. He emphasized: “Unfortunately, we witnessed unacceptable behavior both on the pitch and in the stands, and we strongly condemn the conduct of some so-called fans, as well as the actions of some Senegalese players and coaching staff”.
The FIFA president stressed that “leaving the pitch in this manner is unacceptable, and violence has no place in football and cannot be tolerated”.
Infantino concluded his remarks by emphasizing the need to respect referees’ decisions, saying: “Referees’ decisions must always be respected, both on and off the field, and teams must compete strictly according to the Laws of the Game, because any transgression threatens the very essence of football.” He expressed his confidence that the relevant disciplinary bodies within CAF would take the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
