Cairo, Egypt – Dutchman Arne Slot, manager of Liverpool FC, confirmed that today’s match against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League will be an opportunity to respond to the recent Nottingham defeat.
Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat against Nottingham Forest in the last round of the English Premier League with a score of (3-0).
Slot said in comments via his club’s website: “I usually say after a defeat that the next game is an opportunity to respond, and that is absolutely true in this case. Liverpool is not a club where losing becomes normal. By no means, which means the only option available to us is to respond in the right way.”
He continued: “We all have to do our best to achieve the positive result we need. That’s the minimum requirement, not just tonight, but in every match we play.”
He continued: “On Saturday, we did not meet the standards we set for ourselves. That’s clear. I said later that under these circumstances, the fans supported us in a way that perhaps doesn’t happen at other clubs. But that’s not a given.”
He added: “Once again, it is up to us to create the conditions for positive support by playing good football. We must compete at all times and show the spirit that Liverpool teams are famous for. This is a responsibility that we must all bear, because we know from experience how positive the situation can be in such circumstances.”
He added: “I must emphasize that the first half-hour of the Nottingham Forest match was more in line with these standards than is recognized.”
He explained: “We were the dominant team at that time, but we didn’t achieve what we hoped for. While I’m the first to admit that what happened after that wasn’t good enough, we shouldn’t ignore aspects of our play that were closer to what we expected.”
Slott praises PSV Eindhoven coach ahead of today’s match
He stressed: “Tonight we have to do it in a different competition against an opponent I know very well, of course. PSV Eindhoven are top of the Dutch league. They have won the championship in the last two seasons in a row, so their history speaks for itself. They have a coach who is highly respected, not only in the Netherlands, but in the world of football in general.”
He added: “We met in the Netherlands last season, of course, in a match which PSV Eindhoven won 3-2. So it’s good that we have the opportunity to face them again, and we hope to achieve a better result this time.”
He continued: “They are a very strong team with excellent players – just look at their recent win against Napoli to see that – which makes this match an opportunity to show our best.”
He concluded: “We have to change the course of things for the benefit of our fans and ourselves, and tonight will be a good opportunity to start doing that.”
