Cairo, Egypt – Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher criticized Trent Alexander-Arnold’s appearance in a Real Madrid shirt at Anfield. He asserted that Alexander-Arnold deceived the fans, unlike Mohamed Salah.
Real Madrid fell into the trap of defeat against Liverpool, by one goal to nil, in the match that brought the two teams together for the fourth round of the Champions League.
The match saw Alexander-Arnold come on as a substitute late in the second half. His introduction was met with loud chants and boos from the fans, which only intensified the Liverpool supporters’ chants. This negatively impacted both the player and the team.
Carragher said, in comments reported by the Spanish newspaper AS: “The fans are the ones who determine their reaction. The reason for the bad situation is that Trent, during his 20 years with the Reds, played the role of being a fan in the stadium. The people in the stadium weren’t going to play for Real Madrid for free. Well, it’s his career and he only has one career, he’s a young man and he achieved great success with us.”
He continued: “But if what he said since joining Liverpool is true, that this is the only club for him, that he wants to be a leader and become a legend here at Liverpool, then you wouldn’t leave after winning the league title. And also after having the chance to win more titles with your club. Would you join a club that beat you in the Champions League final twice and that’s the club you want to compete with for more titles? The fans have every right to react.”
He added: “A lot of this stems from the feeling that Trent has misled us a bit during his time at the club. And also, last year, when he didn’t give any interviews or press statements, he didn’t say a word.”
