Oslo, Norway – The Norwegian Royal Court announced on Friday the death of King Harald V at the age of 89. His death comes after a long and distinguished reign on the Norwegian throne, spanning several decades. The Royal Palace had issued an official statement on Thursday explaining that the late king’s health had deteriorated significantly while he was hospitalized. The statement also confirmed that his condition was “very critical” before officially announcing his death on Friday.
King Harald V is the oldest reigning monarch in Europe. He has served as the ceremonial head of state of Norway since 1991. He was hospitalized on August 17th. The royal eye stated at the time that he was receiving necessary medical care and treatment for a bacterial infection in his blood. This infection has caused his health to gradually deteriorate.
