Madrid, Spain – The Carlos III Institute of Health in Madrid announced on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, that Spain has recorded at least 1,028 deaths directly linked to the extreme heatwave currently gripping Europe.

This tragic toll reveals a severe climate deterioration. It represents more than double the 407 deaths recorded in June 2025, which was then the hottest June on record.

Record temperatures

In a related development, the Spanish National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) confirmed in a statement published on the X platform that the first half of 2026 was the hottest on record in Spain, with temperatures 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal levels.

The agency further explained that June 2026 was the second hottest June on record, with average temperatures exceeding the normal average by 3.2 degrees Celsius.

Climate change as a decisive factor

Climate records point to a worrying pattern; the agency confirmed that the last ten years have seen seven of the hottest “first half-years” on record in the time series that began in 1961. This establishes an upward trend in temperatures.

For their part, the World Weather Attribution team of scientists indicated that the heatwave sweeping across Europe since late June is the most severe ever recorded. They also confirmed that such heatwaves would have been “practically impossible” this early in the summer were it not for the direct effects of climate change.

National health challenges

These record figures present Spanish authorities with serious health and environmental challenges. This comes amid ongoing warnings about the dangers of this climatic pattern and its direct impact on the most vulnerable populations. This places additional pressure on national plans to adapt to accelerating climate change, which now threatens the country’s health security.
