Washington, DC – A senior US official revealed that the United States and China are in advanced consultations to develop a joint protocol outlining regulations and standards for the use of artificial intelligence (AI). This comes amid growing international concerns about the rapidly expanding security and economic impacts of this technology.

The official explained that Washington and Beijing recognize the importance of establishing clear rules governing the development and use of AI technologies, particularly given the significant increase in reliance on intelligent systems within the military, economic, and technological sectors worldwide.

He noted that the anticipated protocol may include mechanisms for cooperation and the exchange of views on data security and preventing the dangerous uses of artificial intelligence. Additionally, it may include frameworks to limit the use of these technologies in cyberattacks or activities that could threaten international stability.

He added that both the US and China are also seeking to reduce the potential for technological escalation between the world’s two largest economies. This comes at a time of increasing competition in the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems and for control of future technology markets.

These moves coincide with growing international calls for global legislation to regulate artificial intelligence. These technologies have become an essential part of vital sectors including defense, industry, education, healthcare, and media.

Observers believe that any direct understandings between Washington and Beijing on this issue could represent a significant step toward de-escalating the global technology race. This is especially relevant given the ongoing warnings about the risks of the uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence and its impact on security, the economy, and the global labor market.
