The UK government announced a new £10 million grant to Vertical Aerospace, a pioneer in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology. The funding supports the company’s dual-track initiative to produce military variants Alongside its commercial passenger aircraft.
Government Support and Military Integration
Vertical Aerospace confirmed that the grant brings total UK government backing for its project to £48 million, coinciding with the site selection for its aircraft and battery manufacturing plants. The UK Ministry of Defence has expressed strong interest in adopting the eVTOL platform for operational and tactical missions, leveraging its vertical takeoff capabilities and low acoustic and thermal footprints.
The developer previously showcased its prototype at the Farnborough International Airshow, executing a live demonstration that successfully transitioned from wing-borne forward flight to vertical hover and landing, validating the technology’s operational readiness to aviation authorities and investors.
Certification Timelines and Commercial Scalability
Despite technological milestones, Vertical Aerospace continues to navigate regulatory compliance with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The company aims to secure formal certification by 2028, targeting full commercial operations in 2029. The UK firm faces growing international competition from US developers Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation, Embraer subsidiary Eve, and leading Chinese eVTOL manufacturers.
Vertical Aerospace plans to produce 150 aircraft annually at its existing facility, with long-term plans for a larger factory capable of scaling production to 1,000 units per year. Chief Executive Officer Stuart Simpson highlighted that a hybrid model integrating electric propulsion with a gas generator will offer an extended range of up to 1,000 miles, significantly expanding both civil and military utility while eventually lowering urban ride costs close to standard taxi fares.
